Gulzar is celebrating his 90th birthday this year and this is a big deal for his fans. There were many ups and downs in Gulzar’s life but his luck was a bit disturbed in the name of marriage. Let us tell you an anecdote about how the second marriage in Gulzar’s life ended.

Who is Gulzar?

On 18 August 1934, Sampooran Singh Kalra was born in a village named Dina (now Pakistan) in Punjab, British India, who later came to be known as Gulzar. Gulzar’s father was Makhan Singh Kalra. After independence, his father moved to Bombay (now Mumbai) with his family and due to the poor financial condition of the family, Gulzar left his studies and started doing small jobs.

Along with these jobs, Gulzar used to write some line or the other at different places, for which everyone used to complain to his father, but his father understood Gulzar’s writing and gifted him a pen. After this, his name was Gulzar Deenvi, which later became just Gulzar. Gulzar used to write slogans and used to write some Shayari or other things in his free time. Later Gulzar completed his college studies and joined PWA i.e. Progressive Writers Association.

Gulzar’s film career

Big writers used to come to PWA Sunday meetings and he met many writers here. He met famous writers of that era Shailendra and Bimmer Roy and they introduced Gulzar to Hrishikesh Mukherjee and then Gulzar started working for them. Gulzar started as a lyricist with the film Bandini (1963). After this, he worked for many films. In the year 1971, Gulzar wrote ‘Humko Man Ki Shakti Dena’ for the film Guddi and this song became a hit and also became a morning prayer in most of the schools in India. Gulzar and RD Burman became very good friends and this pair has given many memorable songs to the industry.

Gulzar and Rakhi’s relationship

Gulzar and Rakhee met on the sets of the film Jeevan Mrityu (1970). They became friends here and Rakhee fell madly in love with Gulzar. Gulzar is almost 13 years older than Rakhee, yet she considered him her everything. Gulzar put a condition before marriage that Rakhee will not work in films after marriage and she accepted it because she was sure that Gulzar will change his mind. In the year 1973, both of them got married and they had a daughter Meghna Gulzar. About a year after marriage, Sanjeev Kumar, Suchitra Sen and Gulzar went to Kashmir during the shooting of the film Aandhi (1975).

According to media reports, Rakhi reached here to surprise Gulzar but at the same time Gulzar was in Suchitra Sen’s room. It is said that Gulzar went to take Suchitra Sen to her room in an inebriated condition but Rakhi misunderstood. After this, there was a storm in their relationship and they separated without getting divorced. Even today, both of them live together because of their daughter but not as a couple.
